Biography

Dr. Megan Silas is an Oculoplastic Surgeon and Comprehensive Ophthalmologist at the Williams Eye Institute in Northwest Indiana and at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park.

Megan is a Chicagoland native who grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago. Since childhood, she has always dreamt of being a surgeon, telling her parents she wanted to be a brain surgeon when she was in 3rd grade. With that dream in mind, Megan worked hard throughout grade school and high-school, culminating in her selection as the Valedictorian for Deerfield High School.

She attended the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign College of Engineering for her undergraduate education, where she studied Bioengineering and Chemistry, and graduated with highest honors in the top 3% of her graduating class. She then went to the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine on a merit-based scholarship.

Dr. Silas stayed at the University of Chicago for her ophthalmology residency. During her final year of residency, Dr. Silas was selected from her peers to serve as chief resident. She received multiple awards during her residency, including the Harvey Z. Klein award for exemplary patient care, the departmental Respect and Compassion award, and the Kiernan OKAP award.

After residency, Dr. Silas pursued further subspecialty training in Cosmetic and Reconstructive Facial, Oculoplastic, and Orbital Surgery at Bergen Eyelids in Northern New Jersey with Dr. Dan Landmann. She loves how the eyelids and periocular area play an important role in both maintaining quality vision and promoting a youthful appearance. Dr. Silas is passionate about the intersection of ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery.

Dr. Silas is interested in healthcare advocacy and is a board member of the the Illinois Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. She has traveled to the Illinois state capitol to meet with representatives and advocate for issues facing her patients and the ophthalmologic community. She believes that advocacy is an important tool to improve healthcare on a policy level.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Silas is passionate about giving back. During college, Dr. Silas spent 4-weeks volunteering at a free health clinic in the Ayacucho region of Peru. During residency, she traveled to rural Guatemala to perform vision screenings and distribute glasses to orphan children. On a local level, Dr. Silas has worked with the Pritzker School of Medicine Ophthalmology Interest Group to organize eye screenings at free health fairs on the South Side of Chicago.
